Ever practical, Tony Bates addresses the question of whether people can build a career in online learning and concludes that they cannot. "It would be a mistake to think that online learning will be some esoteric branch of teaching and learning requiring specialism," he writes. "Online learning will not be a separate activity, but one component within a wide range of decisions about teaching and learning." I think he's probably right, but this raised the question of whether there will be a career in teaching as we know it today. And by similar logic I conclude that there will not. As online and traditional education merge, much of what the teacher does will become automated. The roles of the teacher will fragment into different specializations. The all-knowing pedagogue will pass into history.
