Before encountering Haig's essay you'll see Daniel Dennett's supportive introduction. These recently posted essays should be read by those seeking to understand the theoretical basis of learning and cognition. Dennett expresses the idea in a nutshell: "Instead of saying, as some in the linguicentric tradition might want to put it, that it's coding and syntax 'all the way down,' we can now appreciate that it's interpretation all the way up." I would want to say recognition rather than interpretation, because I don't think we're building models per se, but I'm broadly supportive of Haig's approach, and see in it a clarification of a lot of the puzzles I've wrestled with in my own thinking.
