Academia is slowly lurching its way into the 21st century. So I am heartened to see this article on the extraction of references and creation of links in published papers. This post explains some of the thinking behind the exploratory project and the results of some surveys of author and reader preferences (which can, in a nutshell, be summarized as: more links, better links, and no I don't mind if you create links for my paper). One of the things that used to be great about the web is just following a train of thought from link to link. We've lost that, but it would be nice if we could see it again in the references we use in papers and publications (goodness knows we'll never see it in the social networks).
