It's pretty easy for someone like Johannes Ernst to say that decentralized networks never make it. This is because they have to solve "at least one real, burning problem much better than the centralized alternatives," and it's pretty hard to do that. But what decentralized networks do do is last. "Consider the case of RSS vs Twitter. When Twitter came along it grew fast, it overtook RSS," says Dave Winer. This looks like the Ernst thesis in action. But "there will come a time when Twitter shuts down. But it's hard to imagine that day coming for the network of RSS feeds." Even when Google Reader was shut down, RSS continued. If you can survive being killed by Google, you can survive anything.
