Theodore Hoppe recommended this article, which appears to be open access from Springer (49 page PDF). It surveys new approaches based on connectivity found in a number of disciplines, including systems biology, neuroscience, computational neuroscience, geomorphology, ecology and social sciences. Each investigation looks at the problem of identifying the basic unit, understanding emergent behaviour, and measuring connectivity. There's a lot of detail and it's a slow read, but good for a deep understanding of come of the commonalities of connectivity across disciplines.
