Can Universities Live by Their Values?

We live in a world filled with war, famine, poverty and hopelessness. So when the people running the world start writing about how we should live by our values, I become wary. Those 'values' are what led us to where we are today. In the University of Bologna document mentioned but not referenced in the article, none of the four elements of peace - security, identity, voice, opportunity - made the list. And of the semantic condition, autonomy, diversity, openness and interactivity, only diversity made the list. So these things that would make life worth living languish while universities focus on the 'real' values - you know, "a 'very deep' series of discussions about whether it should keep on expanding its student numbers," and of course a working group on research integrity.
