This item came to my attention via a comment on Mastodon. It takes us on a fairly long journey through the early days of the web, its decentralized methods, and how this came to be compromised by centralized systems, first via the search engines, and later via the social networks. For those of us who lived it, this is all review, but it's good ground to cover. So how do we redecentralize? "Taking back control of our personal data, as envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee, is realized by decoupling data storage from services. This means people can store their data wherever they choose, while still enjoying the services they want." In this light, the article goes on to describe the Solid project and decentralization in general.
