I've enjoyed watching Doug Belshaw try different things with his newsletters over the years. I won't say that everything he does is successful, or even good, but I like that he tries. This post is characteristic of the quality self-reflection that comes with it. One thing he's discovered: "Most people do not want more email. So if the only thing you have to offer them is, 'Hey, subscribe to this newsletter and you'll get some more email,' that's not that compelling." Also, on the Patreon-only special benefit: "Not one of the supporters asked for 'exclusive access' to articles a week before everyone else. I just assumed." (Note that I am one of his Patreon supporters, and didn't even bother to read the exclusive posts, because I couldn't share them.)
