Most of the stuff on the NY Times is blocked by a subscription wall, so they're not exactly in a position to talk about 'broken' internet media and contributions to democracy. Though this pag is accessible, at least for now. But the page wouldn't even load on Firefox (which blocks malicious web apps and tracking). So there's that. I'm not saying they're wrong; but I like the model where everybody is blocked by default, and you choose who you talk to. Of course (as the story notes) there's no money for advertiser in that.
