This short post raised a good issue: how do independent reserachers obtain ethical review for their work? Being outside institutions, they do not have access to institutional review boards (IRB). According to this post, the British Educational Research Association (BERA) revised its Ethical Guidelines (48 page PDF) and added some case studies to provide guidance, but these don't really address the issue directly, in my view. Nor does this post address the issue, suggesting instead ways to educate indepent reserachers on ethics, while saying maybe publishers could consider their ethical review requirements, and, of course, that more research should be conducted. But I don't want to be too critical; I don't see anyone else talking about this problem. See also this from BERA.
