Tony Bates offers a very smart and out-of-the-box suggestion to universities for coping with the challenges posed by the pandemic this fall: "move many graduate and fourth-year undergraduate courses online." Think about it. Morfe experienced and advanced students are more likely to thrive online. And it helps universities split large first-year courses into smaller (and hence, safer) sections by freeing up classroom space. This allows first-year students to be more gently introduced to working self-sufficiently. "Introducing online or digital learning gradually in first year, supported by face-to-face classes, is a much better strategy."
