The original title for this item, still preserved in my feed reader, was "Coursera IPO filing reveals company successfully monetizing-moocs". It's funny how the current title is almost the complete opposite of that. Spin, I guess, is everything. And of course, what actually happened at Coursera was that they started producing MOOCs, then, once they were popular, starting charging money for MOOCs, which effectively made them non-MOOCs, but they kept calling them MOOCs anyways. So this is neither success nor failure for MOOCs specifically. Rather, the lesson is, you can successfully charge money for things if you've somehow convinced people that they're free. Which I guess is the history of OER in general.
