What Facebook sees in newsletters

As readers know I've long been interested in newsletters as a learning medium. Fo when a company like Facebook expresses interest, I pay attention. "In a blog post entitled "Supporting independent writers," the company explained its point of view and sketched out the products it is now building... a free, self-publishing tool with robust styling options to create individual websites and an email newsletter; an integration with Facebook Pages to enable publishing across various multimedia formats including photos, live videos and stories (and) the ability to create Facebook Groups and nurture a community of readers." As always with Facebook, the intent is to draw people into the platform, rather than to send them out into the wider web (which, I argue, is what a good newslettrer does). And then there's the potential for revenue, currently being enjoyed by companies like Substack, as people are heading off the platform to monetize their followings.
