Knowledge, Learning, Community

This isn't a long post and I wish Brendan Murphy had expanded his thinking on this somewhat (he should also put his name on his blog so I don't have to play detective to find it). Instead of schooling as an 8:30 to 3:00 event, "What would happen if we thought of education as a service?" he asks. "What if the day length were optional based on the wants and needs of the parents... Why can't a math class be taught at 4 pm instead of being required only between the hours of 8 and 3?" The main thing here, I think, is that he wants to think of the "out of class experiences that often are more engaging and inspiring for students" as a more integral part of 'school', and the idea of 'school as a service' is a way to accommodate that. But the idea of 'school as a service' in general is tantalizing...
