I've been following Stephen Talbott's development of this manuscript for years - maybe even decades - with fascination. This particular chapter is illuminating. "The history of language gives us a reflection of the evolution of human consciousness," writes Talbott. "It points to a time before we became aware of our own existence as distinct Selves observing a world out there' and separate from ourselves..." The 'enchanted'€ landscape of mythic consciousness... could not have been one of conscious invention, unrestrained metaphor, or causal speculation. The earliest historical evidence shows us that humans were not yet possessed of the sort of selves, or the resources of language, conducing to such invention and hypothesis."
