Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is "an umbrella term to cover various online teaching and learning approaches that focus on online intercultural interactions and collaboration." It "usually involves the creation of multicultural teams, made up of students from both institutions who connect online to work on group assignments." I would imagine a lot depends on how those teams and assignments are structured. This article looks at whether COIL develops cultural awareness and finds "a significantly bigger increase in intercultural competence for the US experimental group compared to the US control group, supporting our hypothesis that COIL develops intercultural competence." The assessment is based on Cultural Intelligence (CQ), which is defined as "an individual's capability to function and manage effectively in culturally diverse settings," and Multicultural Personality, success in which is defined as "success in the fields of professional effectiveness, personal adjustment and intercultural interactions."
