Scroll down through the discussion thread for the summary of the survey results. They mostly accord with my own experience. I've never received $5000 for a talk and probably never will. Like most, I do expect travel expenses to be covered, And like the people surveyed, I do like to receive the expense money at the time I offered the talk. On diversity: my observation is that the field has taken great strides to include women, and some movement toward improving support for traditionally under-represented people. It is also moving beyond 'the usual suspects'. All of this results in fewer talks for people like me, but I'm totally fine with that. Giving a platform to practitioners and developers is a good idea, though offering a keynote requires skill as a speaker and presenter of ideas, which they may not have.
