Some good summation by Doug Levin, who links to this piece. For example: "There is an unhealthy, singular focus on student privacy in #edtech. Just as important to evaluate: security, interoperability, reliability, and total cost of ownership." He adds, "This is not a problem solvable by consumers associated with schools; nothing short of regulation is going to move the needle. Full stop." That's usually the case. Does that mean we should "establish licensing bodies for educational technology?" No, I think that's too far. But there's a middle ground between this and the present case where "ed tech companies have largely been left to regulate themselves."
