People who actually consider access and affordability will not be surprised by this, but for the economists in the crowd it might be a surprise: student housing and food are major expenses for college and university students. Back when I was a student journalist we calculated that tuition accounted for 23% of total expenses, and while there is obviously a lot of variability in that number, there's no reason to believe the overall pattern has changed. When we were first developing online learning in rural Manitoba in the 90s one major selling point was that people could learn from their own home or community centre in their own community.
