Here's the gist: "Today's communications landscape demands that social sector organizations move away from a 20th-century broadcasting approach and toward dialogue, relationship-building, and fostering community." Specifically, " Foundations and nonprofits need to focus on community building rather than just pushing messages to an audience (or to that awful, imprecise word that ought to be banished to the jargon jar, 'stakeholders')." This article explains how in a bit more detail. It involves engaging with social issues rather than just talking about them, focusing on responsive and personalized communications, and being a part of the wider community. These aren't easy things for institutions to do. But they are necessary.
