3rd Annual Canadian Graduate Students' Conference in Philosophy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland, Lecture, Nov 11, 1989.

This talk traces the progression of the companion theses of self-interest and self-government through the philosophies of Locke, Rousseau and Mill. Very often the depiction of self-interest, which is a negative trait, is misrepresentative of self-government, which is a positive trait. The paper was accepted but I couldn't make the trip, and it was read for me.
