It may be exam time, but it's also the time schools start thinking about next year's software budget, which is why it is an opportune time for Microsoft to - as this article puts it - "put the squeeze on schools". The deal is simple: pay Microsoft $42 for every computer in the school district, whether or not it runs any Microsoft software, or prepare for an intensive system-wide audit. "Given the fact that the letter came from their marketing department, and included a brochure about their school licensing agreement, this didn't seem terribly subtle to any of us," said Steve Carlson, associate superintendent for information and technology for Beaverton schools.
